Join moderator Deanna Frings, and panelists Drs. Rob Minkes and George Mayzell on our Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast this week as we feature a discussion on how to avoid the pitfalls of chart wars and bias to ensure equitable practices.
This is a very special, podcast re-broadcast of this original live learning event from the Healthcare Experience Foundation team. If you missed the webinar, please be sure to take advantage of this encore presentation.
Biased charting can result in reduced treatment quality or disparities in care plans, potentially leading to poor outcomes, and less coordinated care.
Additionally, patients may experience feelings of disrespect, marginalization, and distrust when reviewing biased electronic health record (EHR) notes, potentially causing them to forego necessary treatment and damage trust with physicians, clinicians, and caregivers.
Dr. Mayzell kicks off the discussion by highlighting the impact of bias in electronic medical records (EMRs), including issues related to accuracy, perpetuation of problems, and the broader audience now exposed to these records.
Dr. Minkes jumps into the chat to share stories about biased language in medical records, emphasizing the need for a coaching approach to address diversity, equity, and inclusion issues.
He also shared examples of biased language that can erode patient trust.
While medical records aim to communicate objective clinical information, studies have shown disparities in treatment based on biased language in medical records.
The potential negative consequences for patient outcomes are dire.
Please make sure to find time to tune into this webinar event to preview strategies to mitigate biased charting, and stay tuned to the Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast. For more information on upcoming webinars and live events from HXF, click here: https://healthcareexperience.org/webinars/
