Being Kinder to Ourselves
This week’s guest on the Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast is Brooke Billingsley. She has been a healthcare professional for more than 25 years and currently serves as Vice President of Service Excellence with the Healthcare Experience Foundation (HXF).
Brooke will be a featured speaker at our upcoming Compassionate Leadership event. Brooke is a leading voice when it comes to communicating the principles and importance of self-compassion. On today’s podcast she brings us crucial wisdom on how to be kinder to ourselves while demonstrating the value of self-forgiveness.
“I’ve been in behavioral science for about 25 years and the interesting part is that we will forgive others before we forgive ourselves,” she told us.
We tend to get locked into narratives about our past and begin ruminating on what we should have done. Brooke has strong words in the middle of today’s chat about why this is so problematic and what can be done to overcome this damaging thought process.
“I can’t go back and change my past, but I can learn from it, and I can create strategies moving forward,” Brooke reminded us.
At the foundation of self-forgiveness is knowing that we did the best we could with what we had at the time. We have to remind ourselves that we can do better tomorrow.
Brooke is adamant that when we surround ourselves with a community that will support and encourage us, self-forgiveness and being kinder to ourselves becomes much easier.
You can revisit Brooke’s first appearance on our podcast called Understanding and Applying the Principles of Self-Compassion.
“When you add that element of compassion, not only to the words we speak to ourselves, but the words we speak to others, you really add that value and layer of purpose that we all want,” she said.
