Craig Joseph MD, FAAP, FAMIA, is our guest this week on the Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast for a candid discussion on technologies’ evolving role in improving patient experiences and fighting burnout among healthcare workers.

As an accomplished speaker on this topic, Dr. Joseph highlights the importance of designing technological solutions in healthcare with a human-centered approach, focusing on how humans think and behave.

Throughout this episode, Dr. Joseph shared insights from his book, “Designing for Health, The Human-Centered Approach,” which emphasizes the need for intentional design in healthcare to prevent common mistakes.

This book was co-authored with his colleague, Jerome Pagani PhD, PMP.

You can learn more about that book here.

With a career spanning nearly three and a half decades, Dr. Joseph has aimed to leverage technology to improve the interactions between physicians and patients as a recurring theme throughout his entire professional journey.

Dr. Joseph is a pediatrician by training. He holds certifications from the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Preventive Medicine, specializing in Clinical Informatics.

One key takeaway from this chat was the importance of simplifying processes to make it easier for patients and healthcare providers to navigate use devices and technological upgrades.  Dr. Joseph shared a story about a patient misunderstanding how to use a nebulizer due to a design flaw in the process, leading to ineffective treatment.

He also discussed the significance of improving the interaction between patients and providers in clinics, emphasizing simple design principles like ensuring screens are visible to both people during consultations.

Dr. Joseph touched upon future advancements such as ambient listening for documentation to reduce clinician burden.

Additionally, Dr. Joseph urged healthcare systems to identify and eliminate unnecessary or cumbersome tasks that hinder efficiency. Transparency and communication were underscored as crucial elements in improving healthcare experiences for both patients and providers.

Overall, Dr. Joseph provided valuable insights into how human-centered design can enhance patient care, streamline workflows, and alleviate burnout among healthcare professionals. He emphasized the need for collaboration and feedback within healthcare systems to drive meaningful change.

By engaging clinicians, nurses, and therapists in identifying and addressing inefficiencies, organizations can create a culture of continuous improvement.

The podcast interview with Dr. Joseph also touched on the importance of transparency in healthcare design, where explaining the rationale behind decisions can improve understanding and buy-in from stakeholders.

By involving frontline staff in the design process and addressing their concerns, healthcare organizations can tailor solutions that meet the needs of both providers and patients.

Furthermore, Dr. Joseph highlighted the potential impact of small design tweaks on patient outcomes and clinician satisfaction. By paying attention to details such as screen visibility or system default settings, healthcare facilities can enhance the overall care experience and streamline workflows.

We sincerely thank Dr. Joseph for his time and insights. His perspective serves as a valuable guide for organizations looking to create more patient-centered, efficient, and empathetic healthcare environments as technology evolves rapidly.
